Living in Grand Island

Grand Island is its own world: a town on an island in the Niagara River, between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. People come for the water, the space and the quiet.

What it's like

A mix of older cottages and ranches, newer subdivisions, and waterfront homes along the river. Beaver Island State Park and Buckhorn Island State Park bookend the island. The Grand Island Central School District serves the whole town.

Things to know

  • The bridges. Every trip off the island is over a bridge. Factor the commute into your decision.
  • Waterfront homes. Check shoreline condition, docks, flood zones and insurance carefully.
  • Well, septic and drainage on some older and rural properties.
